What Are the Different Types of PPC Campaign Ads?

Have you ever been in a meeting and someone asks you to “run a few display ads?” The truth is, the term “display ads” is an umbrella term for the many types of PPC campaign ads that are available for companies to use to connect with their customers. While each type of ad offers customization, different spend levels, and different opportunities to leverage your digital marketing and content strategies, there may be some ads that resonate more with your customer. Here are just a few of different types of PPC campaign ads we utilize for our clients:

  • Display Ads aka Traditional Display Ads
These PPC ads appear on various websites in different sizes, including square, skyscraper and landscape. These ads can be big with image and text, or just a couple of words and a CTA button. Most PPC ads are a type of display ad.

  • Remarketing Ads aka Retargeting Ads
These display ads appear throughout different websites after a customer has visited your site but hasn’t made a purchase. They’re designed to remind them that they should come back and complete a transaction.
  • Google Shopping Ads
We’ve all seen these. You type in a product in Google and a carousel appears with a variety of products that fit your search query. These are called Google Shopping Ads, and they’re the perfect solution for companies that carry a large variety of products or companies that focus on a particular high-value product. These ads allow your customers to find your product, in some cases, before they even find you.
  • Search Ads
Search ads are found at the top of the first page of Google, and they’re a way for companies to purchase and reinforce their position on the top of the search listings. They’re also a great tool in your search engine marketing toolbelt to get ahead of their competitors in the search listings, but they can also be extremely expensive when going for a high-value keyword or keyword phrase.
  • Social Ads
Social ads are one of the most popular types of ads that we create, and they appear across any and all social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and more. These ads are designed to either target certain customer segments with a specific interest or boost brand awareness across a large audience. If you don’t have much of a social presence, avoid putting too much money into social ads.
  • Native Ads
Ever scroll a website and click on something, thinking maybe it’s a news article and it’s actually an advertisement? These are native ads. They’re designed to look like the content around them, not like actual ads. You may see native ads with a tag like “Promoted” or “Recommended” on them to identify they are an ad.
  • In-Stream Ads aka Youtube Ads:
We’ve all seen them—you click on a Youtube link and you’re greeted with a 15-20 second commercial. This is called a pre-roll ad, and it’s just one type of in-stream ad available to businesses. You can also run a mid-roll ad, which interrupts a video with an ad, and image ads, which are a type of native ad displayed in the Youtube search results. In many cases, they are not even videos and instead, link to various products relevant to the viewer.
  • Discovery Ads:
Ever scrolled Google Discover, Youtube, or even clicked around on your Promotion tab in Gmail and seen an ad? Those are discovery ads (Youtube also calls them image ads), and they are designed to display an image and encourage customers to learn more about a product. Discovery ads are a type of native ad.
