The 4 Foot Rule Cycling Kit

Tired of having someone’s side view mirror in your armpit and not being able to get all your profanities out before that monster truck is long past you? Have you already spent a fortune in blinky lights, radars, rear facing cameras and possibly therapy just to brave your next ride? Do you have a short ride down Fury Road to get to the good single track? If so, this kit may be for you.

We created this cycling kit to promote the New Jersey and Pennsylvania “4-Foot Rule,” which requires vehicles to maintain a minimum of four feet of distance when passing cyclists.

New Jersey Bike Accidents
  • Rising Numbers: In recent years, New Jersey has seen a rise in bicycle-related crashes, particularly in densely populated areas. In 2021, there were over 1,500 reported bicycle accidents, with a noticeable increase during the warmer months.
  • Urban Areas: Most bike accidents in New Jersey occur in urban regions, such as Newark and Jersey City, where there is heavier traffic and greater interaction between cyclists and vehicles.
  • Injuries and Fatalities: In 2022, New Jersey reported 25 cyclist fatalities, highlighting the continued need for bike safety measures. Injuries often range from minor to severe, with many incidents involving head trauma or broken bones.
  • Common Causes: The leading causes of bike accidents include driver inattention, unsafe passing distances, failure to yield, and bicyclists riding against traffic.
  • Safety Laws: New Jersey’s “Safe Passing Law”, effective as of 2022, requires drivers to leave at least four feet of space when overtaking a cyclist, or to slow down and pass safely when four feet isn’t possible.
Pennsylvania Bike Accidents
  • Steady Concerns: Pennsylvania has consistently recorded between 700 to 1,200 bicycle accidents annually, with many of these resulting in injuries or fatalities.
  • Fatality Statistics: In 2022, there were 16 reported cyclist fatalities in Pennsylvania, highlighting a consistent concern for bike safety.
  • Urban and Rural Mix: Philadelphia, the largest city in Pennsylvania, is a hotspot for bike accidents, but rural areas also see crashes due to higher speeds and less visibility for cyclists.
  • Causes of Accidents: Common factors include distracted driving, failure to adhere to the four-foot rule, and cyclists not using proper lighting or riding against traffic.
  • Legal Protections: Pennsylvania’s “4-Foot Law” mandates that drivers give at least four feet of clearance when passing a cyclist, aiming to reduce collisions and improve safety for both bikers and drivers.
Shared Concerns in Both States
  • Driver Inattention: Distracted driving remains a major issue in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania, contributing to a significant portion of bike accidents.
  • Cyclist Behavior: Riding against traffic and lack of visibility due to inadequate lighting are also major factors in many accidents.
  • Public Education: Both states are pushing for increased awareness and enforcement of bike safety laws, with public campaigns highlighting the importance of the four-foot rule and safer driving habits around cyclists.
